A bonus item is a special object that is hidden in the environments of the main House of the Dead series and its spiritual successor, Vampire Night. These objects serve as a major gameplay mechanic, awarding points and other benefits to the player when shot.
Bonus items are typically found inside destructible containers like barrels and crates. However, if certain conditions are met (either rescuing all civilians or reaching the end of the game without dying), a secret room filled with bonus items is revealed.

- Vampire Night's watermelon bonus item is a reference to European folklore in which inanimate objects, including fruit, transform into vampires when there is a full moon.[2][3]
- Med Kit, Golden Frog, and Gold Coin are the only three items to appear in every main The House of the Dead games so far (albeit several changes on their appearances).
- Both The House of the Dead and The House of the Dead 4 are the only two games to had all their bonus items appeared in a single area (three items in The House of the Dead and 10 items in The House of the Dead 4). The highest number of bonus items available in a single area is 13 items, which happened on The House of the Dead. However, the highest points available in a single area belongs to The House of the Dead 4, having a total of 10,000 points.
