He was originally one out of two convicts who were both charged for countless crimes (including one instance of eating a little boy's puppy) before being killed on the electric chair six months ago and then "tinkered on" by Clement. The two shared the same mutant appearance; big and fat, covered in tattoos, wearing a black skin-tight mask on their heads (very similar to that of the second game's boss Strength), and with a multi-dagger crossbow-like launcher on their handless right arms. Clement originally sent them both to attack G and Washington, but for some reason Brutus attacked his fellow inmate and killed him, leaving himself alone to take care of the two agents.

During Battle
Brutus's main form of attack is to shoot the crossbows from his arm at the player(s). These must be shot to avoid damage. Unlike other projectiles, they don't always move in a straight path and are easiest to stop when initially fired. At the same time, his weakpoint is the same "hand" firing the crossbows.

At certain points during the battle, you must also fight a small group of shielded police-like mutants who can be difficult to hit. If a grenade is available, throwing it is the easiest way to dispense of these monsters.

Clement Darling, introducing Brutus and his partner to G and Isaac Washington

Brutus was a one of two large, heavily-built mutant juggernauts. He serves as the boss of Jailhouse Judgment, the penultimate chapter of The House of the Dead: Overkill.

History

Brutus was a death row inmate at Bayou County Correctional Facility. He and another inmate had performed heinous crimes, leading to their execution via electric chair, six months prior to the incident. During this time, Warden Clement Darling begun working on the two corpses, turning them into large near-identical mutants.

After taking the elevator down towards the military facility beneath the prison. Clement summoned Brutus and his partner to attack G and Isaac Washington. Whilst introducing the two, the unnamed mutant proceeds to attack Brutus, with him retaliating and soon killing him by snapping his neck. After killing his fellow prisoner, he turns his attention to the two men, firing a bolt at them, which misses both.

After a short battle, Brutus is knocked onto the ground. He tries to get up, but can only let out one final roar before dying.

Appearance

Brutus is the corpse of a infamous prisoner, turned mutant via Clement's tinkering.

His body is coated in a plethora of black tattoos. These include ones resembling webbing, and a massive one on his chest with the word 'BLACKHEAD' above it.

Befitting those words inked on his chest, Brutus wears a tight black bag over his head, just allowing some of his facial features to be seen.

His lower right arm had been amputated, and replaced with a bolt-launcher, powered by a large battery attached to his back and waist. Said weapon is used by Brutus in the conventional way of firing electrified bolts, but also as a close range weapon, using it to stab or bludgeon people.

Besides the bag, Brutus wore orange prisons pants, with leather cuffs around the lower legs, black boots, thick brown belt that one of the batteries is attached to, and a thick leather cuff around his left hand.

Gameplay

Original

Brutus's arena has two health packs and a set of grenades.

Brutus's main method of attack is firing bolts from his arm launcher; they fire two at a time and usually spin in circles while approaching the player. The launcher is also his weakpoint, although it is only vulnerable when circled. He will occasionally call in riot shield mutants, who will slowly advance on the player while Brutus safely fires away from behind them. The player should save grenades for this or they risk losing a massive chunk of health to crossbow bolts while they attempt to dispatch the mutants.

Director's Cut

The battle is largely unchanged, with him following the player and attempting to line up shots, which can be interrupted by shooting his arm launcher. There is no targeting circle to let you know when he's vulnerable, simply fire whenever he starts aiming. Like other bosses, he now has an action command move where he rushes the player, who must dodge by firing on dunk-tank targets that appear on screen. He will get his launcher stuck in the ground after this, allowing the player to shoot the battery on his back.

The riot shield mutants are replaced by standard mutants this time, making the fight somewhat easier. During this phase of attack, while mutants continuously spawn and attack the player he will periodically recharge his battery pack; his back will be to the player, making his battery pack vulnerable. He will then turn around and shoot electric bolts which do more damage, he is not vulnerable at this stage and so the player should focus on shooting the arrows out of the air.

Trivia

  • Brutus's name may come from the Roman Politician Brutus, most known from being one of the lead (and most famous) conspirators in the betrayal and assassination of Julius Caesar. This name could also have been chosen, as he appears after the death of Papa Caesar.
    • Ironically, Brutus from Overkill is betrayed by his fellow mutant, yet he fails to kill him, being killed by Brutus himself.[1]
