Caleb Goldman (referred to simply as Goldman in the games) is the main antagonist of the series. He was the head of the DBR Corporation. He is known as the brains in the zombie-infestations in the 1998 Curien Mansion Case as well as the 2000 Venice Outbreak, where he sought to "revert humanity to its natural state" as a means to "restore the balance of nature". He is also responsible for the events in The House of the Dead 4 and possibly The House of the Dead 3.

Caleb Goldman was a genetic engineer and a financier of the DBR Corporation. Detesting humanity's self-destructive tendencies and abuse of nature, he sought regulating populations to revert mankind to its "natural state". He funded and used the research of the late Dr. Curien to produce hostile biologically-engineered creatures, before masterminding two worldwide incidents.
Story
The House of the Dead
Goldman hired a scientist named Dr. Roy Curien to assist him in his goal. He also used him as a decoy, to mask who was really responsible. After Rogan and G left the mansion, Goldman came across Curien's dead body and took all his research.

The House of the Dead 2
+
He is the main antagonist of The House of the Dead 2 and The House of the Dead 4.

Two years after the events of the Curien Mansion incident, with the research of Dr. Curien in the hands of Goldman, he unleashes a wave of zombies upon Venice, Italy. Upon hearing of the arrival of the AMS, he leaves a message on Amy's phone, taunting the agents and telling them to come to the coliseum. Amy and Harry follow Goldman's request and they are met at the coliseum by Strength. Strength captures Amy and Harry, leaving the latter severely injured. James and Gary later come to the aid of the two and Goldman appears on a giant screen and taunts them. He claims that in time they will see who is right, and he looks forward to meeting them again.
+
Biography
Afterward, Goldman directs his attention to his master creation, the Emperor. When everything is set in place, Goldman simply waits for the AMS agents to come to him at his headquarters. Once James and Gary arrive, Goldman explains the reasoning for his actions, and uses the "Life Cycle" as a basis for them. After explaining himself, Goldman unleashes the Emperor on James and Gary. James and Gary engage in battle with the Emperor and eventually come out the victor. Upon the Emperor's defeat, Goldman claims that it is not over yet, and in time a successor will come. Following these words, Goldman commits suicide by throwing himself off the top of his headquarters.

Goldman once again makes an appearance in The House of the Dead 4 as the game's primary antagonist. However, he is mostly shown through flashback scenes in which Goldman reveals his true feelings about humanity. A second outbreak was plotted and carried out by Goldman in 2003, three years after the events of the original infestation, and a third outbreak was successful, as seen in The House of the Dead III.
+
Goldman was also involved with an organization that was established in 1880 by his ancestors, alongside those of DBR Corporation research director Dr. Curien and a mysterious man named Thornheart.<ref>SEGA Interactive R&D#1. (13 September 2018). House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn. Sega. Throughout the game, Kate and James are often fighting without any knowledge of who is behind the outbreak, that is, until James receives an e-mail from Goldman. The e-mail states that "everything's set", and that Kate and James have only one hour until the nuclear missile launch. The two set course for Goldman's headquarters, and upon entering the building, they are met by the Star. After the battle with the Star, Kate and James make it up to Goldman's office, and they are greeted with another message. In this message, Goldman claims that his goal was not to destroy all humans with nuclear missiles, but to rather revert them to their natural state. He then goes on to state that Pandora's Box has been opened, and there is nothing he can do to stop it. Following this message, The World appears, forcing Kate and James to do battle with it. After the fight, James sacrifices himself in order to prevent Pandora's Box from opening, putting an end to Goldman's plan.

Goldman funded Curien's experiments with the BioReactor, a DNA-editing machine, which produced hostile lifeforms. These efforts costed Curien his sanity and his life; on December 20, 1998, he was killed by Magician, one of his creations. Goldman released creatures in an unnamed city on February 26, 2000. He left a message on AMS agent Amy Crystal's phone, civilly inviting her and partners James Taylor, Gary Stewart, and Harry Harris to meet him at the city Coliseum. The agents split up, but a creature named Strength captured Amy and Harry; the latter was injured. While James and Gary drove to Goldman's headquarters, Goldman tended to Emperor. When confronted, he explained his motivations before unleashing Emperor upon them. After Emperor was destroyed, he serenely claimed that a "successor" will eventually come. The nuclear missile launch was discovered by James and new AMS agent Kate Green in an underground Classified Information Room. James later received an e-mail on his PDA from Goldman, who stated that "everything's set" before starting an hour-long countdown to the launch. The agents raced to Goldman's headquarters and defeated the Star, a creature who sought testing their strength as Goldman's "parting wish"; James was injured after the Star exploded.
  +
  +
Goldman left the agents a message after they deactivated the nuclear missile launch in his office: he explained his motives behind the launch, and that he cannot stop the "[opening]" of Pandora's Box. Following this, the World -- having fully matured -- emerged from below the building courtyard and battled James and Kate. James ultimately set his PDA to self-destruct, sacrificing himself in the resulting explosion to destroy the World and finally close Pandora's Box.

Goldman's associate, Thornheart, would chastise him as "soft". He claimed that the "true end" will begin, and that there was more than one Pandora's Box.<ref>Sega Wow Inc. (30 December 2005). The House of the Dead 4. Arcade and Playstation 3. Sega. +
  +
Personality
  +
Goldman was a stoic, distant, and calculating human being. Even when confronted and defeated by his enemies, whom he addressed as "friends", his voice never rose above a serene, but stern tone. The closest he ever came to displaying anger was describing to James Taylor and Gary Stewart the "sin" man committed, but even then, Goldman's tone was still reserved and controlled.
  +
  +
He harbored a deep contempt regarding what the human race might become due to their self-destructive tendencies, disruption of nature, and their excessive "[breeding]". He also possessed calm, unshakeable confidence that his vision of a world free of the destruction wrought by man would indeed come to pass; it was not an issue of if he'd succeed, but a matter of when, with defeat only delaying the inevitable.
  +
  +
This same ironclad faith is perhaps why he stepped off his building with such serenity. As he had told James and Gary upon the Emperor's defeat, everything was far from over, and he had already made arrangements for the Emperor's successor in the form of Pandora's Box. He was absolutely certain his plans would come into fruition even after his death.
  +
  +
Goldman was also intelligent, being described as having extensive knowledge genome and gene theory.
  +
  +
Non-canonical ending appearances
  +
Goldman also appears in multiple other endings in The House of the Dead 2, 4, and The Typing of the Dead. These endings are not canon, either due to the tone or what is established in future games.
  +
* In The House of the Dead 2, Goldman may appear at the entrance of his headquarters as a creature.
  +
* In an alternate ending to The House of the Dead 4, after Goldman says "Hope is such a splendid thing" in his recording, he may remove his glasses; the camera zooms in on his face, with his eyes suddenly turning red and gashes appearing on his skin.
  +
* The Typing of the Dead, a parody of 2, has three possible endings depending on the answers chosen during the final phase of Emperor's fight. These endings occur after Goldman bids farewell to James and Gary.
  +
** Goldman leans back and falls off of the building, just like in the original game. Goldman's fall is now accompanied by an appropriate cartoon sound effect, and the entire fall is seen. The impact results in a large fiery explosion, leaving the agents speechless and dumbfounded.
  +
** Goldman leans back and falls off the building, but a bungee cord is tied to his legs. He is sprung back up, lands on the edge of the building, and burps.
  +
** Instead of leaning back to fall, Goldman raises his hands and farts as he flies straight into the sky. The agents look on, speechless and dumbfounded.

Have you ever thought about the future? What will happen to this world if humans continue to breed? Don't you see? Humans have set themselves upon the path to inevitable destruction.

Goldman[src]

Caleb Goldman (カレッブ・ゴールドマン Karebbu gōrudoman?) was a genetic engineer and a financier of the DBR Corporation. Detesting humanity's self-destructive tendencies and abuse of nature, he sought regulating populations to revert mankind to its "natural state". He funded and used the research of the late Dr. Curien to produce hostile biologically-engineered creatures, before masterminding two worldwide incidents.

He is the main antagonist of The House of the Dead 2 and The House of the Dead 4.

Goldman (left) pictured with Thornheart (center) and Dr. Curien (right).

Caleb Goldman was the head of a world-famous, unidentified financial group.[1] An expert of the Genome Theory,[2] he believed that humanity was self-destructive, citing increasingly frequent wars, natural disasters, and new illnesses as evidence.[3][4][5] His ultimate goal was to not destroy humanity, but merely "revert them to their natural state".[6]

Goldman was also involved with an organization that was established in 1880 by his ancestors, alongside those of DBR Corporation research director Dr. Curien and a mysterious man named Thornheart.[7]

Goldman funded Curien's experiments with the BioReactor, a DNA-editing machine, which produced hostile lifeforms.[2] These efforts costed Curien his sanity and his life; on December 20, 1998, he was killed by Magician, one of his creations. AMS government agents repelled the threat.[8] Goldman visited the Curien Mansion sometime after the incident, where Curien's corpse remained.[9]

2000 incident Edit

In his early forties,[1] Goldman developed more creatures at his headquarters. He redeveloped Magician and also produced Emperor, a being meant to rule over humanity.[10] The World, Emperor's successor, matured beneath the building courtyard.[11]

Goldman appeared on a giant screen and taunted the group, claiming that he was looking forward to meeting them again.[10]

While James and Gary drove to Goldman's headquarters, Goldman tended to Emperor. When confronted, he explained his motivations before unleashing Emperor upon them. After Emperor was destroyed, he serenely claimed that a "successor" will eventually come. He then committed suicide by leaning backwards over the top of his headquarters, falling to his presumed death.[10]

It is unknown if the successor Goldman was referring to was either Thornheart or the World.

2003 "Pandora's Box" events Edit

Goldman's posthumous message to James Taylor.

Three years later, Goldman's plan posthumously continued. With a resurgence of creatures, he attempted launching nuclear missiles to regulate world population.[6] In recordings, he repeatedly associated his plan with the term "Pandora's Box".[6][12]

The nuclear missile launch was discovered by James and new AMS agent Kate Green in an underground Classified Information Room. James later received an e-mail on his PDA from Goldman, who stated that "everything's set" before starting an hour-long countdown to the launch. The agents raced to Goldman's headquarters and defeated the Star, a creature who sought testing their strength as Goldman's "parting wish"; James was injured after the Star exploded.[11]

James ultimately set his PDA to self-destruct, sacrificing himself in the resulting explosion to destroy the World and finally close Pandora's Box.[11]

In another message on Goldman's computer, he cryptically told the viewer to "travel north", concluding that hope "is such a splendid thing".[13]

Legacy Edit

Goldman's associate, Thornheart, would chastise him as "soft". He claimed that the "true end" will begin, and that there was more than one Pandora's Box.[14] Thornheart would later dedicate a monument to Goldman.[15]

Personality Edit

Goldman was a stoic, distant, and calculating human being. Even when confronted and defeated by his enemies, whom he addressed as "friends", his voice never rose above a serene, but stern tone. The closest he ever came to displaying anger was describing to James Taylor and Gary Stewart the "sin" man committed, but even then, Goldman's tone was still reserved and controlled.

Goldman was also intelligent, being described as having extensive knowledge genome and gene theory.

Non-canonical ending appearances Edit

Goldman also appears in multiple other endings in The House of the Dead 2, 4, and The Typing of the Dead. These endings are not canon, either due to the tone or what is established in future games.

  • In The House of the Dead 2, Goldman may appear at the entrance of his headquarters as a creature.
  • In an alternate ending to The House of the Dead 4, after Goldman says "Hope is such a splendid thing" in his recording, he may remove his glasses; the camera zooms in on his face, with his eyes suddenly turning red and gashes appearing on his skin.
  • The Typing of the Dead, a parody of 2, has three possible endings depending on the answers chosen during the final phase of Emperor's fight. These endings occur after Goldman bids farewell to James and Gary.
    • Goldman leans back and falls off of the building, just like in the original game. Goldman's fall is now accompanied by an appropriate cartoon sound effect, and the entire fall is seen. The impact results in a large fiery explosion, leaving the agents speechless and dumbfounded.
    • Goldman leans back and falls off the building, but a bungee cord is tied to his legs. He is sprung back up, lands on the edge of the building, and burps.
    • Instead of leaning back to fall, Goldman raises his hands and farts as he flies straight into the sky. The agents look on, speechless and dumbfounded.
