(Overkill, EX, Zombie Revenge, and others)
The Crawler is the boss for the Scream Train level of The House of the Dead: Overkill, where it is the fourth boss of the game. It harasses the player throughout the level with a miniboss appearance partway through, and makes an early "cameo" appearance in the Director's Cut exclusive level "Creeping Flesh" suggesting it was developed and raised in Bayou City's meat packing factory.
Appearance
The Crawler resembles a giant praying mantis. It is referred to in-game as a "bug," and G speculates that it is proof that the Mutant Compound can affect non-humans. Despite this, a close look at its anatomy suggests it is actually a grotesquely deformed human. Its limbs have multiple joints and are extremely powerful, allowing it to perform impressive acrobatics and outrun a speeding train. Its hands have fused into two large scythe-like talons, capable of slicing through steel. These talons are also its weakpoints (in the original Wii version), possibly housing sensitive nerve endings.
Battle
First Encounter
The Crawler is first fought as a miniboss partway through the train, where it rips the roof off the train and attacks the player from above. It is driven away after several shots at its weak points (its claws in the Wii version and its head in Extended Cut).
Original
For most of the battle, the Crawler will leap onto the side of the train and attempt to cut the player down with its claws. The player must shoot at the joint of the attacking claw to send it hurtling back into the forest. It is important to remember to shoot at the lower wrist joint of the claw - when the Crawler is on the left side of the train the targeting circle is incorrectly placed at the upper elbow joint, which will not take any damage.
When its health is sufficiently low, it will jump onto the front of the train. It will slowly advance on the player while using its claws to shield its new weak points, its eyes. When its health is reduced by half its right eye will explode, followed by its left eye when its health is completely emptied. Blinded, the Crawler stumbles off the front of the train and is crushed under the wheels.
Extended Cut
The fight is largely unchanged in the Extended Cut, with the main difference being that its weak point is now its head instead of its claws. It also gains two new attacks: it can now launch balls of spit, which must be shot out of the sky, and it has an action command attack where it charges down the roof of the train and must be dodged by shooting the appearing targets.
Trivia
- The Crawler shares a boss theme with the Screamer in-game, but there is a unique boss theme for the Crawler which can be found in the files.
- The Crawler is likely a reference to Resident Evil 0, which takes place on a zombie-infested train driving through a dark forest with a giant bug as the final boss.
