Priestess (named 'The High Priestess' in the localized version) is a mutated cephalopod (squid/octopus) or jellyfish that guards Thornheart's underground laboratory inside Scarecrow Mansion. It was later encountered by Ryan Taylor and Kate Green rising up from the murky water tank after deactivating the self-destruct system from the control panel. It can traverse on land and through waters, primarily uses its tentacles to attack and cling on obstacles, and creates a sound similar to other aquatic animals.

The two AMS agents fought against the monster eventually shooting a tank filled with an explosive substance and incendiary rounds causing the creature to explode into numerous pieces of flesh and guts.

Bestiary Overview

Priestess, judging from the name itself, seems to be a female squid/octopus hybrid. Her mutation grants heightened size, an ability to survive on any terrain, and durable protection and offense. Her main weakness are her eyes since they're probably the softest organs she possesses. She also has a large gaping mouth filled with hundreds of sharp teeth but doesn't utilize it.

The Priestess has very well control over her tentacles using them as a means of movement and offense. She also constantly swings in different motions to deflect attacks and confuse its attacker. Its tentacles have mediocre durability when attacked as they are affected by gunfire. However, they're strong enough to support the massive body weight of the creature as it dangles from high objects. The suction cups of its tentacles seem to be jagged and slightly sharp enabling it to strike at its victims.

Her skin has an increase in thickness making it impossible for outside attacks to penetrate her. Still, her eyes are unprotected and could possibly be the softest parts of her leading to be its main weak point. But because of the motion of her tentacles and gelatinous form, it's almost difficult to aim at her eyes. Though the Priestess has an increase in physical protection, her biological improvements couldn't fully aid her. When dampened by an explosive subtance and fired with incendiary rounds, she explodes entirely. It can be assumed that her anatomy isn't enhanced enough to withstand outside harmful chemicals; proven by her cause of death, hinting that she hasn't gone through an 'evolved' state even if she's extended her mutation levels.

Combat

SPOILER ALERT!
Throughout the entirety of her battle, despite The Priestess' weak points being her eyes, the concetration of fire are her tentacles. They are the major threat the player(s) have to deal with. But after dealing with her tentacles, her eyes can be then shot depleting her life bar adding and the possibility of killing her with gunfire. However, due to the short time to fight the creature, it eventually came to the end when using a smarter tactic to finish her off.

Trivia

  • Priestess is the second boss after Temperance that cannot be defeated through normal means, with Kate and Ryan only able to defeat her after soaking her with a flammable chemical that then incinerates her entire body. This is also followed by the Moon from the same game.
    • Though it is possible to defeat her if the fight lasted longer. It can be assumed that this was a storytelling decision to give a clever approach rather than continuing the firefight.
  • Priestess is also the second boss after the Empress to be named after feminine Arcana.
  • Priestess' name received slight modification from her tarot origin, dropping "High" from the name.
    • In the localized version, "High" is included in her name.
  • Priestess resembles Cthulhu from H.P. Lovecraft's mythos, the Dianoga from Stars Wars: A New Hope, and the sea monster from the 1998 horror film Deep Rising.
  • Oddly enough, the boss has a striking resemblance to William Birkin's final form from the 1998 survival horror game Resident Evil 2. It's evident with the multitude of teeth around the centre and the overall blob-ish appearance.
