We confirmed a large number of creatures appearing in a house. Your mission this time is to rush to the place and annihilate the creatures.

House of the Dead-Scarlet Dawn-THE ATTRACTION (ハウス・オブ・ザ・デッド ~スカーレット・ドーン~ THE ATTRACTION, Hausu Obu za deddo 〜 sukāretto dōn 〜 THE ATTRACTION?) is an interactive simulator ride at Joypolis in Yokohama, Japan. It is a spin-off to Sega's arcade rail shooter House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn.

Announced in March 2020,[1] the ride's launch was delayed to June 13 due to 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic.[2] The ride replaced The House of the Dead 4 Special, which closed on February 2.[3]

Ride experience

Facade

House of the Dead-Scarlet-Dawn-THE ATTRACTION is located on the second floor of Joypolis.[4] The sign for The House of the Dead 4 Special remains, but with a flat-screen display installed over its logo.

Gameplay

THE ATTRACTION is a theater-type ride with seat vibration, air effects, a surround sound system, and "ultra-large" LED displays. Up to 12 players may simultaneously compete for score, shooting creatures and ultimately "a big boss".[5] The experience is approximately 10 minutes long.[4]

According to Japanese players on Twitter, THE ATTRACTION has no new story elements in the matter of The House of the Dead 4 Special; instead, it is a repackaging of the Scarecrow Manor (prologue) and Annex levels from the original Scarlet Dawn, with Chariot serving as the end boss.

Release

On January 22nd, 2020, Joypolis announced on Twitter that their The House of the Dead 4 Special cabinet would be closing on February 2nd.[3] Its replacement, House of the Dead-Scarlet Dawn-THE ATTRACTION, was revealed just over two weeks later with a release date of March 19, 2020.[1] The release was pushed back to the following day due to the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic, with Joypolis originally set to reopen March 31st.[6] However, it was closed for three months before reopening in June 12.[2]

Snacks themed after the attraction were offered to riders for a limited time.[7] The giveaway ended on June 18.[8] A second giveaway with stickers of Jolypolis' mascots with a zombie ran from October 17 - 31, 2020.[9]

As of June 13th, 2020, THE ATTRACTION was officially opened to the public. In-game screenshots depict creatures in what appears to be an area of Scarlet Dawn's first level. There are also four different-colored flames, which represent gunfire from the multiple players.

Reception

The French website SEGA-MAG gave House of the Dead-Scarlet Dawn-THE ATTRACTION a score of 6/10, praising the gameplay and ride installation while criticizing its short length and lack of replay value.[10]

Trivia

  • In THE ATTRACTION's promotional poster and gameplay screenshot, the Rogers creature's left arm is missing due to an in-game graphical glitch.
