-Magician, House of the Dead 2

  +
Type-0, codenamed "Magician", was a sentient, synthetic humanoid creature with pyrokinetic powers. He is a recurring boss in the main House of the Dead video game series.
Type-0, given the production name "The Magician" (Japanese: Majutsu-shi 魔術師) (Tarot No.I), is the first of the Four Heavenly Kings, sentient mutations wielding the primal forces of nature, that was created by Dr. Roy Curien. He wields the power of pyrokinesis, which is the power of fire.

  +
An unfinished product of the BioReactor, Magician was created alongside Wheel of Fate to destroy humanity. During a 1998 bioterror incident, he disobeyed and killed his creator, Dr. Curien, before being destroyed by AMS agents. He was resurrected in 2000 and 2003 by individuals affiliated with Curien's work.
He is an A.I android that has appeared in almost every HOtD game, making him the most recurring boss and the only boss to make multiple appearances. Because of this, it is believed that Magician has become one of the main antagonists' of the series.

  +
In combat, Magician disoriented his targets with fast aerial movements, and boasted a variety of fireball projectiles. His weak points were his exposed, pulsating muscles.
Magician's extremely malevolent yet mysterious behavior and eerie appearance make him a favorite among fans. He has his own fan base on multiple social websites such as Deviantart and Facebook.

  +
History
He has been dubbed "The Most Difficult Boss in Series", because of his fast-paced attacks and, because of this, it is very difficult to shoot him. He shoots fireballs, that, when timed, can hit a player between 3-6 seconds if not shot at.

Personae and Physical Appearance
The Magician is portrayed as a self-aware android with feelings. This may also mean he has a personality, but this has not been fully explored.

  +
Creation
In House of the Dead 2, he is most likely the only mutant that is not either dumb (Strength), has no feelings (Hierophant and Tower), or is just a killing machine from the start (Judgement, and in occasions of the attitude toward the human race, Emperor).. Fan theories point out that when Goldman created him, he wasn't aware of his stubornes or his self-awareness. When he was resurrected, Goldman realized this and wanted to rid of him, so he sent him out to fight the AMS Agents that approached his building, knowing that, because of the Magician's battle scars from earlier on, he would most likely not survive the fight.

  +
Magician, alongside Wheel of Fate, began life as a gene developed by Curien during his time as the DBR Corporation's research director. He was incubated inside Curien's BioReactor, a machine that edited the DNA sequence in organisms.
The Magician is a mutant whose height or size is not quite known (he is not easy to compare with the size of the man, as he is always seen flying several feet in the air. (He never touches the ground), although it can most likely be safely assumed he is very tall. He has two, large, white ram horns coming out from the top of his head, a red scar on the right side of his face, and his left side of his face has no flesh,; instead, there is only muscle. His ears are very large and pointed, resembling those of how daemons ears were portrayed in the Middle Ages.

  +
Up to the point of being released, Magician was seen as a perfect creation alongside Chariot, Hangedman, and Hermit and was considered a masterpiece. However, Magician was also an unfinished project, lacking several pieces of armor on his body. Curien could control Magician at will, but an unknown individual changed the creature's programming,<ref>{{Cite web|url = http://www.thewebsiteofthedead.com/?p=2937|title = "The House of the Dead: Sub Story"|archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20200522212448/http://www.thewebsiteofthedead.com/?p=2937|archivedate = March 22, 2020|author = Kori|quote = In addition, it was a creature called Type 00 “Magician” that became the first creature to stand above the unfinished organisms. His body is covered with plated armor, but it doesn't cover his whole body. Pieces of armor all over his body are torn off, also revealing muscle. The exposed muscle are the weakpoints in the game. He had clawed hands with three fingers, and very large feet that are pointed with two long, bony toes ending in sharp nails.

  +
After curing his terminally-ill son Daniel, Curien obsessively pursued controlling life and death through science; the effort, funded by Caleb Goldman, produced hostile creatures and triggered staff walkouts. Curien went insane, releasing the creatures in his mansion on December 17th and 18th, 1998, but kept the Magician in incubation.
His breast, abdomen, crotch, and back are covered entirely with armor, not injuring him if these pieces of the body are not shot at.

  +
1998 Curien Mansion incident
His arms are usually folded in front of him. His right arm is usually bent and is seen in front of his navel and crotch. His left arm is usually bent upwards, with his hand pointed up, protecting his breast area. He is seen like this in all three of the games.

It is hard to tell if the Magician has two eyes, one eye, or any eyes at all. In House of the Dead 2, he has one eye on the left side of his face while the other on his right side had fallen out, revealing an exposed socket. In House of the Dead 1, his eyes are shaded over, making eyes hard to make out. In House of the Dead 4, it appears that neither of his eyes are seen.

On December 20th, AMS agents Thomas Rogan and G investigated disappearances at the mansion. They battled to a research center and confronted Curien, who unleashed the "masterpiece" upon them. However, Magician — declaring that he obeys no one — killed Curien. Rogan and G defeated the being, who, before succumbing to an explosion, warned them that they "...haven't...seen...anything yet!"
In House of the Dead 2 and artwork done for House of the Dead 4, the Magician appears to have very long, sharp teeth.

  +
First resurrection
His arms and legs are covered with black cables, which pulsate slowly. In House of the Dead 2, when the cables pulsate, the sound of heartbeat can be heard.

In House of the Dead 2, he is more weak, with large worms emerging from parts of his body and having more muscle revealed. Despite this, he is also much faster, and shoots fireballs at the player faster, most likely protecting himself better after being killed beforehand at the Curien Mansion in 1998.

Personality
The Magician's personality is somewhat unknown, but from what has been seen from him, he appears to be a stubborn yet occasionally loyal Android. Unlike other places robots, he displays feelings, such as anger, hate, hurt, etc. He has an incredible distaste for the AMS, like Goldman.

  +
On February 26th, 2000, just over a year after the Curien Mansion incident, Magician was reanimated by Goldman, a financier who furthered Curien's incomplete research into life and death. Magician was loyal to Goldman and Emperor, a creature created by Goldman poised to rule over mankind. He ambushed AMS agents James Taylor and Gary Stewart outside of Goldman's headquarters, but was ultimately destroyed again.
Magician does not want to think of himself as a servant, but instead as a capable and powerful being. He has no fear in showing his dark and brutal side and had no fear in showing his disgustingly grotesque appearance in House of the Dead 2.

  +
Second resurrection
Overall, summed up, the Magician is a stubborn, disloyal mutant who will not follow anybody's command. He has high intelligence, and appears to know what is going on around him or what will happen. He displays other forms of intelligence such as strategy when attacking his opponents and being able to help Goldman create the Emperor.

-A dying Roy Curien, right after he is attacked by the Magician, House of the Dead

The House of the Dead
  +
In 2003, Goldman staged a posthumous incident worldwide, wiping out most of civilization. After her partner James sacrificed himself to defeat Goldman's ultimate creation, the World, rookie AMS agent Kate Green collaborated with G to fight the incident back to its source. In an unidentified building, they found Magician, who emerged from a large glass chamber and vowed revenge for the pain he had endured.
The Magician is the final boss of House Of The Dead.  He was created by the insane mad scientist Dr. Roy Curien to act as a servant. However, upon being awakened, the Magician reveals that he is self aware, and will not follow the commands of anybody. Upon saying this, he creates a fireball from his hands and throws it at Curien, killing the scientist.

  +
Upon defeat, Magician summoned Pandora's Box, attempting to activate clones of himself; he was fatally wounded after a thrown grenade, declaring "Nothing can erase my pain" before exploding.
Upon killing Curien, Magician furiously breaks a wall open in the wall, where Agents Rogan and G pursue it outside. The fight begins with Magician throwing fireballs at the Agents, but as the fight continues he will fly around quickly and throwing more fireballs. After a grueling battle, the Magician, damaged and beaten, omits a chilling omen, saying "You...haven't seen...anything yet!" before exploding in a huge, loud fireball. All the final bosses of House of the Dead also die this way.

  +
Appearance
The House of the Dead 2
  +
Throughout the series, Magician is depicted as an armored, levitating humanoid with horns and talons. His lower right leg, upper left leg, lower right arm, and upper left arm have exposed muscles and (in the first two games) pulsating nerve-like appendages. In The House of the Dead 2, Magician is heavily scarred and rotten, with worms wriggling in his eye and other parts of his body. He returns in The House of the Dead 4 Special with a less-rotten appearance and electricity coursing through his muscles.
Just over a year after the Curien Mansion Incident, making his omen in the first game come true, the Magician was reanimated by Caleb Goldman, head of the powerful DBR Corporation, furthering Curien's incomplete research into life and death.

  +
Other appearances
The Magician was housed at the Goldman building in Venice to oversee the creation of the Emperor and safeguard it during incubation. AMS agents James Taylor and Gary Stewart arrived at the building's front plaza to stop Goldman's plot, but before entering the building, they are waylaid by the Magician, now displaying loyalty to Goldman and the Emperor. This is most likely because of his vulnerability and now knowing he is not as powerful as he originally was and/or thought he was.

  +
The House of the Dead III
The Magician has a more disturbing appearance, with worms jetting out from all parts of his body, and more muscle is shown. His face is contorted with pain. There are dry bloodstains all over his body, another contribute to him being eaten alive by worms. His right eye had now disappeared, and instead, a large, pink worm hangs out of it, completing the disgusting appearence.

  +
Magician appears as a bonus item: the Mini-Magician, a small golden statuette found in destructible background objects. The Mini-Magician flies about in a quick manner like him, making it more difficult to shoot; a successful shot yields 2000 points to the player's score. In III, when the item is on-screen, a high-pitched version of his line "I've been waiting for this time to come" from 2 can be heard.

  +
Furthermore, IIIs attract mode shows Magician's form in the first two games. Dr. Curien also mentions him in a flashback.
It is unknown why worms are still in and out of his body even after Goldman put him in an incubator to resurrect him and cure him, most likely because he wanted the Magician weaker, making him less of a threat to himself and to still be able to help him with his experiment, Emperor.

  +
The House of the Dead 4
When Agents James Taylor and Gary Stewart are confronted in a grueling battle with him, his now-unknown breakpoints are now known, which are his exposed muscles. He is now much more faster, to compensate with being more vulnerable. If being shot in the muscles in the right times, he can be defeated quickly and the player is able to avoid tedious battle.

  +
Once more, Magician makes a cameo appearance as the Mini-Magician bonus item. Its behavior is the same as in III, except when on-screen no line is spoken.

  +
The Pinball of the Dead
After a very grueling and arduous battle, the Magician drifts swiftly into the air, battered and beaten with shattered cable, and again, explodes. No remains are seen.

  +
Magician makes an appearance as the fifth boss in The Pinball of the Dead, and retains his appearance from 2. Similar to his appearances in previous games, Magician will quickly attack the players using fireballs, blocking their pinball from moving. He will also rapidly fly from one area of the screen to the next. However, unlike previous games, the player is not required to hit a specific spot on the Magician in order to damage him.
If he is defeated by James, James will say "Only man himself can control his fate...you're nothing!"

  +
Magician's voice is also used to alert the player when they have the opportunity to enter a boss battle. The player will hear Magician say, "I have been waiting for this time to come", a line used before Magician's battle in The House of the Dead 2. Also, when the player gets a game over, he will say "You have no future."
If he is defeated by Gary, Gary will say "You're the one who's gonna get beat, Magician!" He will only say this if only one player is playing with Gary. If two people play, and since Gary is the dueteragonist, he is the second player, with James being the first player. He will not say it then.

  +
Gameplay
In this game, Magician says his most famous quote: "I've been waiting for this time to come. You have no future. Either I get you...or the Emperor will (another hintage to him being weaker than usual). Either way, your fate is in our hands!"

  +
Overview
The House of the Dead III
  +
In all of his appearances, Magician is an incredibly fast and dangerous adversary. His flight speed is unrivaled, and his teleportation around the battlefield disorients players as he hurls fireballs or attempts to charge. With some exceptions, most of his attacks throughout the series are the same.

  +
Magician's weak points are his lower right leg, upper left leg, lower right arm, and upper left arm. They are classified as "unknown" in The House of the Dead and The House of the Dead 4 Special, but in The House of the Dead 2 they are revealed on his diagram prior to the battle.
The Magician himself does not appear in the third game, though he is mentioned in the flashback before the final level.

  +
The House of the Dead
Also, a golden statue is seen of him in all three boss levels, omitting the first and final levels. When the statue of it, it grants the player 2000 points, but to compensate, it flies around in a quick manner, and the player only has a few seconds to hit it, making a target lock-on on it very difficult.

  +
Phases
The House of the Dead 4 Special
  +
#While spinning, Magician will hurl two fireballs from either hand at the player before flying to another spot. After doing this twice, he will hurl four fireballs from both hands, which are more difficult to shoot down. His fireballs can be shot down, and Magician can be damaged as he attacks with them. This phase ends when he flinches, causing any created fireballs to self-destroy.
The Magician makes another return in House of the Dead 4 Special. This time however, it is unknown who resurrected him, but it is most likely that Goldman requested on a video he recorded for the Magician to be brought back to life. It is also unknown if this is the original Magician or a clone, but it is most likely the latter, for he recognizes the AMS Agents.

  +
#Magician will fly rapidly to the left or right of the arena to puzzle the player. After three teleports in either or both directions, he will charge at the player with a fireball in his hand, and this fast attack can only be disrupted with a successful shot to one of his weak points. Six successful hits end this phase.
  +
# Magician will repeat the first phase followed by the second phase.
  +
# Magician will fly to the middle of the arena and project a large group of fireballs in the air that will slowly rain down on the player, and must all be shot to avoid damage. Magician can only be attacked as he charges the fireballs when the camera is focused on him.

  +
Strategies
Kate Green and Agent G confront him after they fight their way up to his labratory, where he is in an incubator. Before he emerges, fireballs will appear and fly toward the Agents. After shooting all the fireballs, the Magician's incubator will shatter, revealing his new form. He tells the two agents that he has been waiting for them, and that they will have a taste of the pain that he has endured. The fight begins shortly after his speech.

  +
*Magician's flight is represented by differently colored afterimages of him:
  +
**Blue is his standard attack of throwing fireballs from a distance.
  +
** Red is his charge attack.
  +
*Magician is invulnerable while flying around. Only shoot when he is approaching or readying fire attack.

  +
The House of the Dead 2
The Magician has a new appearance, with blueish skin on his face, whiter armor, and the pulsating cables on his arms and legs have been replaces with electrical currents. The worms on his body have now disappeared. He is also much faster and stronger, sometimes flying so fast that the game camera itself can have a hard time focusing on him.

  +
Phases
After an arduous fight, the Magician will summon up Pandora's box and attempts to open it, muttering "This is the end!" At this point, Kate must throw a grenade at him, with the player having only one shot to throw it at him. If the player hits him, he will be injured sufficiently and utter "Nothing can release my pain..." before exploding. This is the good ending. If the player either misses him of doesn't throw the grenade in the time limit, clones of the Magician in incubators will rise up from the floor. The Magician will laugh wickedly, showing the Agents that they have failed. The screen will then fade to black, with the words BAD ENDING appearing on the screen. The fate of Kate and G is unknown.

  +
# Magician will fly rapidly to the left or right of the arena to puzzle the player. After flying rapidly three times in either or both directions, he will charge at the player with a fireball in his hand, and this fast attack can only be disrupted with a successful shot to one of his weak points. Five successful hits end this phase.
  +
#Magician will repeat the first phase followed by the second phase. The difference for the second phase is that four successful hits end it.
  +
#Magician will fly to the top of the screen and sends the fireballs straight at the player. He throws slightly fewer fireballs which are scattered around the middle and is vulnerable the entire time. However, this attack is faster as these fireballs do not slowly drift to the ground like they did in The House of the Dead. He will repeat this attack until he is defeated.

  +
Strategies
Unlike the other two games he has appeared in, Magician appears to be following his own command. It is also unknown what his plans were after he was finished incubating, but the clones of himself suggest that he was out to destroy mankind or take over the world. In this game, he shows a vehement hate for the AMS Agents, suggesting this is his attitude toward humans overall and also that he wants revenge on the AMS for destroying him twice.

  +
*Magician will be enveloped in white depending on the player's performance and difficulty level, or when he performs his final attack.
  +
*As with the original game, Magician is invulnerable while flying.

  +
The Typing of the Dead
Despite having a different appearance, his weakpoints are the same as in the other games.

Cancelled Toyline
+
Phases
The Magician was an Action figure that appeared as a collectible for the House of the Dead toyline before it was cancelled. Along with him was Judgement, Hierophant, Strength, and Chariot. He was (and is) the most expensive of the collection, costing over $400 dollars back then and is now selling for $3000 on eBay.

  +
#Magician flies quickly to the left or right of the arena as the prompt is displayed. To avoid damage, the player must type the displayed phrases or short sentences without making any typos or taking too long. This phase ends after about 12 successful prompt completions.
The figure is tall, standing over 12" in heighth and is very well-built. His skin and armor is black and charred from his previous battle before being resurrected by Goldman and his face is contorted. He is more grotesque than his game portrayal.

  +
#In his final phase, Magician hovers upward while launching fireballs at the player. Each attack consists of 4 fireballs to stop; 3 small ones, followed by a fourth larger one. Each fireball has its own phrase or sentence for the player to type. This phase ends after about 5 attacks are stopped.

  +
Strategies
Other differences in appearance are longer ram horns, larger feet, and longer arms and hands. Instead of him having his arms crossed prospectively around him, they hang loosely down. There are different versions of the Magician figure, with the first figure having larger hands that hang loosely down, and the second figure, which had smaller hands, feet, and gold skin. The left side of his face is blue. This figure can be seen on www.figures.com

  +
*In the first phrase, playing too fast will likely result in a typo and damage. It is best to type at a steady pace while focusing on the accuracy of one's spelling and grammar.

  +
The House of the Dead 4 Special
Trivia
*The Magician is probably the most intelligent of all the mutants in House of the Dead series.

  +
Phases
*A prototype of the Magician is built in House of the Dead 4, named Star. They are both the same height and have the exact same scar on the same side of their faces. They both don't have any hair on top of their heads, and both possess the power to fly.

  +
#Before actually emerging to battle the AMS agents, Magician launches a salvo of fireballs at them from within his incubation chamber. This triggers a quick time event in which the players have to shoot all of the fireballs down to avoid taking damage. Magician emerges after the attack's conclusion, regardless of the player's success or failure in deflecting it.
  +
#Magician will fly in any direction on the screen before performing one of three random attacks:
  +
#* Magician will hurl two fireballs from either hand.
  +
#*Magician will hurl four fireballs with both hands.
  +
#*Magician will charge at the player with a fireball in his hand.
  +
#At 50% health, Magician will hover upwards before performing one of two random attacks. He will continue doing so until he is defeated once more:
  +
#*Magician will let the purple aura increase in intensity before hovering down to ram at the player.
  +
#*Magician throws the fireballs into the air to home in on the player.

#After diminishing Magician's health, he will summon and attempt to open Pandora's Box. The player is given the chance to stop it with a grenade. If the player fails in stopping Magician from opening the box, he will proceed to release numerous clones of himself from incubation, showing that Magician had replicated himself. Laughing malignantly, he implies that he will attack and overwhelm the AMS agents and then all of humanity with his clones, resulting in the Bad Ending. In the Good Ending, Magician is fatally wounded by a grenade and succumbs to a violent explosion once more. With his final breath, he has time to utter one final monologue - "Nothing can erase my pain".

Who are you? Nobody gives me instructions. I shall destroy everything.

Magician to Dr. Curien, upon awakening in the BioReactor.[src]

Type-0, codenamed "Magician" (魔術師, Majutsu-shi?), was a sentient, synthetic humanoid creature with pyrokinetic powers. He[note 1] is a recurring boss in the main House of the Dead video game series.

In combat, Magician disoriented his targets with fast aerial movements, and boasted a variety of fireball projectiles. His weak points were his exposed, pulsating muscles.

History

Creation

Main article: The House of the Dead (1996 video game)

Magician, alongside Wheel of Fate, began life as a gene developed by Curien during his time as the DBR Corporation's research director. He was incubated inside Curien's BioReactor, a machine that edited the DNA sequence in organisms.

Up to the point of being released, Magician was seen as a perfect creation alongside Chariot, Hangedman, and Hermit and was considered a masterpiece. However, Magician was also an unfinished project, lacking several pieces of armor on his body.[2][3][excerpt 1] Curien could control Magician at will, but an unknown individual changed the creature's programming,[4], and "born into an unshackled existence". [5][excerpt 2]

First resurrection

On February 26th, 2000, just over a year after the Curien Mansion incident, Magician was reanimated by Goldman, a financier who furthered Curien's incomplete research into life and death. Magician was loyal to Goldman and Emperor, a creature created by Goldman poised to rule over mankind. He ambushed AMS agents James Taylor and Gary Stewart outside of Goldman's headquarters, but was ultimately destroyed again.

Second resurrection

I have been waiting for this moment for some time. Now you shall have a taste of the pain that I have endured!

The Magician to Kate Green and G.[src]

Magician awakening yet again.

Upon defeat, Magician summoned Pandora's Box, attempting to activate clones of himself; he was fatally wounded after a thrown grenade, declaring "Nothing can erase my pain" before exploding.

Appearance

Throughout the series, Magician is depicted as an armored, levitating humanoid with horns and talons. His lower right leg, upper left leg, lower right arm, and upper left arm have exposed muscles and (in the first two games) pulsating nerve-like appendages. In The House of the Dead 2, Magician is heavily scarred and rotten, with worms wriggling in his eye and other parts of his body. He returns in The House of the Dead 4 Special with a less-rotten appearance and electricity coursing through his muscles.

Other appearances

The House of the Dead III

Magician appears as a bonus item: the Mini-Magician, a small golden statuette found in destructible background objects. The Mini-Magician flies about in a quick manner like him, making it more difficult to shoot; a successful shot yields 2000 points to the player's score. In III, when the item is on-screen, a high-pitched version of his line "I've been waiting for this time to come" from 2 can be heard.

Furthermore, III's attract mode shows Magician's form in the first two games. Dr. Curien also mentions him in a flashback.

The House of the Dead 4

Once more, Magician makes a cameo appearance as the Mini-Magician bonus item. Its behavior is the same as in III, except when on-screen no line is spoken.

The Pinball of the Dead

Magician makes an appearance as the fifth boss in The Pinball of the Dead, and retains his appearance from 2. Similar to his appearances in previous games, Magician will quickly attack the players using fireballs, blocking their pinball from moving. He will also rapidly fly from one area of the screen to the next. However, unlike previous games, the player is not required to hit a specific spot on the Magician in order to damage him.

Magician's voice is also used to alert the player when they have the opportunity to enter a boss battle. The player will hear Magician say, "I have been waiting for this time to come", a line used before Magician's battle in The House of the Dead 2. Also, when the player gets a game over, he will say "You have no future."

Gameplay

Overview

In all of his appearances, Magician is an incredibly fast and dangerous adversary. His flight speed is unrivaled, and his teleportation around the battlefield disorients players as he hurls fireballs or attempts to charge. With some exceptions, most of his attacks throughout the series are the same.

Magician's weak points are his lower right leg, upper left leg, lower right arm, and upper left arm. They are classified as "unknown" in The House of the Dead and The House of the Dead 4 Special, but in The House of the Dead 2 they are revealed on his diagram prior to the battle.

The House of the Dead

Phases

  1. While spinning, Magician will hurl two fireballs from either hand at the player before flying to another spot. After doing this twice, he will hurl four fireballs from both hands, which are more difficult to shoot down. His fireballs can be shot down, and Magician can be damaged as he attacks with them. This phase ends when he flinches, causing any created fireballs to self-destroy.
  2. Magician will fly rapidly to the left or right of the arena to puzzle the player. After three teleports in either or both directions, he will charge at the player with a fireball in his hand, and this fast attack can only be disrupted with a successful shot to one of his weak points. Six successful hits end this phase.
  3. Magician will repeat the first phase followed by the second phase.
  4. Magician will fly to the middle of the arena and project a large group of fireballs in the air that will slowly rain down on the player, and must all be shot to avoid damage. Magician can only be attacked as he charges the fireballs when the camera is focused on him.

Strategies

  • Magician's flight is represented by differently colored afterimages of him:
    • Blue is his standard attack of throwing fireballs from a distance.
    • Red is his charge attack.
  • Magician is invulnerable while flying around. Only shoot when he is approaching or readying fire attack.

The House of the Dead 2

Phases

After flying rapidly three times in either or both directions, he will charge at the player with a fireball in his hand, and this fast attack can only be disrupted with a successful shot to one of his weak points. Five successful hits end this phase.
  3. Magician will repeat the first phase followed by the second phase. The difference for the second phase is that four successful hits end it.
  4. Magician will fly to the top of the screen and sends the fireballs straight at the player. He throws slightly fewer fireballs which are scattered around the middle and is vulnerable the entire time. However, this attack is faster as these fireballs do not slowly drift to the ground like they did in The House of the Dead. He will repeat this attack until he is defeated.

Strategies

  • Magician will be enveloped in white depending on the player's performance and difficulty level, or when he performs his final attack.
  • As with the original game, Magician is invulnerable while flying.

The Typing of the Dead

Phases

  1. Magician flies quickly to the left or right of the arena as the prompt is displayed. To avoid damage, the player must type the displayed phrases or short sentences without making any typos or taking too long. This phase ends after about 12 successful prompt completions.
  2. In his final phase, Magician hovers upward while launching fireballs at the player. Each attack consists of 4 fireballs to stop; 3 small ones, followed by a fourth larger one. Each fireball has its own phrase or sentence for the player to type. This phase ends after about 5 attacks are stopped.

Strategies

  • In the first phrase, playing too fast will likely result in a typo and damage. It is best to type at a steady pace while focusing on the accuracy of one's spelling and grammar.

The House of the Dead 4 Special

Phases

  1. Before actually emerging to battle the AMS agents, Magician launches a salvo of fireballs at them from within his incubation chamber. This triggers a quick time event in which the players have to shoot all of the fireballs down to avoid taking damage. Magician emerges after the attack's conclusion, regardless of the player's success or failure in deflecting it.
  2. Magician will fly in any direction on the screen before performing one of three random attacks:
    • Magician will hurl two fireballs from either hand.
    • Magician will hurl four fireballs with both hands.
    • Magician will charge at the player with a fireball in his hand.
  3. At 50% health, Magician will hover upwards before performing one of two random attacks. He will continue doing so until he is defeated once more:
    • Magician will let the purple aura increase in intensity before hovering down to ram at the player.
    • Magician throws the fireballs into the air to home in on the player.
  4. After diminishing Magician's health, he will summon and attempt to open Pandora's Box.

Strategies

  • Multiple shots on Magician are required to disrupt any attack. This is important when he does his charge attack which requires the cancel bar to be completely depleted to prevent life loss.

The House of the Dead developer Sega AM1 conceived Magician after two days of brainstorming.[6] They wanted him to be strong and "cool", as well as "handsome" in contrast to the other enemies.[6][7] Director Takashi Oda was pleased with how Magician turned out.[6]

Magician was originally a "perfect", angel-winged being who was invincible. Dr. Curien, atoning for his actions, would have hugged Magician as he self-destructed. A bad ending, in which Magician escaped and the world was destroyed, was also considered.[8][excerpt 3]

Magician is voiced by Chris Okawa in The House of the Dead: Remake.[1] Okawa said that it was hard coming up with a less-synthesized, more "human" voice for Magician.[9]

  2. Excerpt from The House of the Dead Official Guide,
    "しかし、謎の男によってプログラムを意図的に変更され、何人の束縛も受けない存在として誕生する"
  3. Excerpt from The House of the Dead Dennou Shinan: Dr. Curien no Houkoku Sho, p.158:
    "小田:あれも当初は天使みたいに羽根の生え た完全体のマジシャンが登場して、プレイヤ ーは絶対に勝てないんですよ。そこにキュリ アンが登場して「私の考えは間違っていた」 と言っ てマジシャンに抱きついて自爆するは ずだった。そこでグッドエンディングとバッ ドエンディングが用意されていて。バッドエ ンディングの場合はマジシャンが羽ばたいて いって最後に世界が滅びる。"
