Type-0483, codenamed "Temperance," (テンパランス) is a giant mutation met by Kate and James as they enter the streets of Venice. The giant is possibly around 9 meters (30 feet) tall and resembles a mob lord clad in nothing but stretch pants, shoes, and a single fingerless glove, Temperance charges at Kate and James. His body is comprised mostly of gelatinous fat, making him all but impervious to the agents' attacks. In addition, he has a habit of curling up into a ball and rolling at the target. His weakspot is his head, although shots to the head will only cause him to recoil rather than suffer any actual damage.

As Kate and James exit the subway into the zombie-infested streets of Venice above, they attempt to gain higher ground to assess the situation. As they search for a good vantage point, Temperance arrives and tries to stomp on the agents. Realizing that this did no good, Type 0483 turns around and begins chasing them. A fight ensues as the agents try in vain to subdue the gelatinous giant. Kate and James, seeing that they can not harm him through conventional means, lure him up to a clock tower. Using a mechanism at the top, they launch Temperance from the tower and drop a massive iron clock on him, crushing his skull and killing him.

Interestingly, Temperance bears several markings in the form of tattoos that cover the majority of its body like Justice. These markings are also (partially) seen on the decaying bodies of some zombies seen in earlier parts of the game. Those same zombies also resemble mob members and street punks, which hints at a connection between Temperance and the zombies. Temperance was likely dispatched to cause havoc within the city along with the initial zombie mobs.

Temperance also appears in The House of the Dead EX.

Bestiary Overview

The beast, as stated above, must have been a crime mob leader at it's human form judging by the tattoos on his arms, chest, love handles, leather pants and a single fingerless glove. He's been given the name Toadman because his head resembles slightly that of a humanoid toad hybrid(nothing similar to the Lobber from Overkill). His body is mutated to be mostly composed of large flesh pounded fat that ammunition has little to none damage to it. From observation, his head is the source of the beast's weakpoint due to the less fat and bumps covering it. However, even gunfire shots to the head won't do great harm to the beast. Supposively, the brain must be it's true source of weakness so a large heavy object impacted on it's head will damage it's skull and broken remains would inflict on the beast's brain. His Form of attack is that he curls up into a ball and starts creating a rampage by rolling.

Strategy

[ TEMPERANCE Type 0483 ]

WEAK POINT: The face

NO DAMAGE: Anywhere else

ROUND 1: Temperance simply steps toward you. Shoot his face when it's not covered by his fat, and do it quickly. He will jump on YOU after four steps.

ROUND 2: Temperance steps towards you again. Since he's much closer to you now, be precise and accurate when shooting his head.

ROUND 3: Temperance ducks and rolls towards you, his front facing you. Shoot his head before he starts rolling. He will do four rolls before he hits you.

Before round 4 begins, Temperance will turn to look at the AMS agents

ROUND 4: Temperance lies down and rolls towards you, but backwards! Shoot at his head when needed, and he will do four rolls before he hits you. A grenade can be used, but is optional.

Before round 5 begins, the AMS agents enter the Clock Tower.

ROUND 5 (Clock Tower Floor 1): A wave of zombies greets you the moment the tower door opens. Kill them all.

ROUND 6 (Clock Tower Floor 1): Another wave of zombies appears behind the flight of stairs. Dispose of them quickly.

ROUND 7 (Clock Tower Floor 2): Temperance peers through the windows. Like the Empress, fire at his face every moment you see his head. If you don't get him, a behemoth of a fist smashes through the wall to crush you for damage. Reload whenever his face is obscured.

ROUND 8 (Clock Tower Floor 2): Temperance ONCE AGAIN peers through the windows. Fire at his face everytime you see his head. If you didn't get him, a behemoth of a fist smashes through the wall to crush you for damage. Reload whenever his face is obscured.

ROUND 9 (Clock Tower Floor 3): A huge horde of zombies, followed by a few vampire zombies afterwards. You may shoot the Oil Drum to your right to decimate a few of them and take care of the rest.

ROUND 10 (Clock Tower Floor 3): Shoot Temperance as he makes his "last stand" Then, as the SUCCESS bar appears, shake your SMG until you fill the bar. You have around 5 seconds to do so. If you fail to do so, Temperance bites you (He bites you when his eyes turn red) ,and you'll return to the pull-that lever task to permanently destroy Temperance.

AFTER THE BATTLE:

JAMES:Temper this Buddy

KATE:How do you like my low fat,all lead diet

AUTHOR'S NOTES:

BOSS'S MAIN POINT OF VULNERABILITY / HOW TO "OWN" TEMPERANCE: ALL rounds of the battle have Temperance' main weakpoint openly exposed. Speed and Accuracy are key to simply stun him each round. Keep focused on the face and keep firing. You have ample time to stun him. Save the grenades, as they will prove useful against Temperance's rolling attacks.

BOSS'S HIGH ACCURACY TRICK: Each time you stun him, Temperance shakes his belly. Shoot either his head or his stomach to see "bullet negations" on the skin. Do this throughout prior you enter the clock tower. Before the clock lever sequence, shoot the face of Temperance for extra hits before releasing the clock.

Trivia

  • Temperance, along with Justice, shares his name with a cardinal virtue. His appearance, though, seems to be the total opposite of Temperance, as the virtue is self-restraint and sobriety while the monster is a gigantic relentless glutton.
  • Temperance is the first major mutation un-killable by normal methods, only being destroyed by an environmental factor triggered by James and Kate.
  • Temperance shares the same ability as Mr.Heart from Fist of the North Star.
  • This is the first boss in the entire series that cannot be damaged by firearms or grenades (quite fitting, as the cardinal virtue of Temperance implies a lot of endurance). The other two are Priestess and Moon from House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn.
  • Many consider Temperance the strongest boss in the entire series, as the boss only got stunned when hit by firearms or grenades, and continues to pursue the players without having much trouble. Some even believe he survived the events of the game after the falling clock face simply bounced off his face.
