The House of the Dead 5, abbreviated HOD5, is the tentative name[1] of a cancelled horror-themed on-rail light gun shooter developed by Sega. It was planned to be the sequel to The House of the Dead 4 and the fifth entry in the main House of the Dead series.
Developed around 2012 and directed by Takashi Oda, the game had some assets finished before it was shelved.[1] Sega would revisit the series with a proper fifth installment, House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn, in 2018.
The game's existence and an image of its production document were revealed in an October 2019 interview with Oda.[1] Photos of production materials were shared on Twitter by a collector in June and July 2024.[2]
Development[]
The House of the Dead 5 was developed around 2012 and was directed by Takashi Oda. The creatures that appeared and the story's introduction were finished. The arcade cabinet was similar to prior House of the Dead cabinets but with a new "gimmick"; the idea was scrapped due to technical and budgetary issues.[1]
Oda declined to revisit The House of the Dead 5, stating that if he did otherwise, he would be unable to complete the House of the Dead series' story while he is still involved.[1]
Plot[]
According to production materials, The House of the Dead 5 was set in the year 201X, at least seven years after The House of the Dead 4 and nine years before The House of the Dead III. Gary Stewart, Amy Crystal, and an unnamed third character were apparently the playable characters of the game.[2]
Gameplay[]
The player weapon was planned to be a KRISS Super V submachine gun.[2] The cabinet featured two 50 inch monitors attached together to provide a larger screen size.[3]
