The Typing of the Dead: Overkill is a PC game released for Steam on October 29, 2013. It is based on The Typing of the Dead spin-off series and The House of the Dead: Overkill Extended Cut, which is included in the release. The game was released by Modern Dream after the original developer, Blitz Games Studios, folded during development. The game was published by Sega.

Gameplay

Like previous Typing titles, while the game plays similarly to the core game it was based on, players now type words shown on the screen to kill zombies and fend off attacks. The story and gameplay otherwise remains the same, although the phrases and challenges add a comical element to the game.

Downloadable Content

Sega announced that 2-player co-op multiplayer would be released shortly after the game's release as free DLC. Word packs have also been released that replace all of the words in the game with new ones related to a specific theme. All packs listed are paid DLC with the exception of the Sci Fi pack.

  • Dancing with the Dead - March 20, 2014

Development

The game was conceived in June of 2013 and given a four month deadline to complete. It would be developed by Blitz Games Studios, whose staff included people who worked on the original engine for HOTD: Overkill. Unfortunately, the company folded while the game was in development in September 2013, threatening it with cancellation. Project Lead Ollie Clarke and the small team working on the game were determined to finish and release it regardless, although the studio's closing would also nullify their contract with Sega. However, Clarke and a colleague realized the contract could theoretically allow them to retain the unfinished assets and complete the game with a new license. They would be unemployed and without income, but they would be able to complete the game and release it.

Clarke successfully negotiated with Sega for a new license to complete the game, which would continue development under Modern Dream, an independent label previously founded by Clarke, which would also ensure the team was paid. Clarke had the development team move into his small apartment with six weeks left to finish the game. Learning about the crowded workspace and that they were working from their laptops, Sega granted them office space at Hardlight (known best for the Sonic Dash, Sonic Jump, and Crazy Taxi: City Rush mobile games) where the game was completed.

Sega made the risky move of releasing the game without prior announcement or marketing, just in time for Steam's Halloween sale. Thankfully for the developers, social media and message boards spread the word about the game, and the game is considered a success.
